Training on Mentors

Though it was not possible to cover everything in the limited time we had on the four evenings, enough was accomplished to prepare the mentors to meet their mentees and embark on a meaningful relationship.

The training sessions covered topics including-:

Objectives of the programme

The youths in the programme

Roles of a mentor.

Building relationship with mentees.

Skills of mentor; including listening skills.

Mentoring process.

Curriculum and activities .

The sessions allowed the participants the opportunity to understand the characteristics and needs of the mentees. Questions were raised and answered throughout the sessions and this gave the participants the confidence they needed to look forward to the process of being a mentor.

Through role play activities participants explored communication strategies and setting boundaries; two very important issues in building relationships with young people.

Participants went away with a wide range of suggested activities to engage in with the mentees, and with the assurance of on-going support. Thanks to everyone for contributing to a very engaging, enlightening and productive training program.

Please share your thoughts on the training session-:

What was most helpful for you?

What were some learning points for you?

How confident are you now to embark on the mentoring process?

What more would you like to learn?

Any other thoughts......?
